The goals of humane education include deeper connection with and positive behavior change toward humans, animals and the environment. This study was conducted to determine whether participation in a humane education camp was effective in positively changing 8-10 year old students’: (a) knowledge of animals, (b) care about animals, (c) propensity for environmental and wildlife stewardship, and (d) compassionate behavior toward animals. A four-day camp was hosted by the Institute for Human-Animal Connection and the Zoology Foundation of Crooked Willow Farm in Larkspur, CO. The camp took place at the Crooked Willow Farm Zoology Foundation's animal sanctuary. The camp curriculum was influenced by theory and research on the following: conservation psychology, social learning theory, empathy and moral development theory, socio biological theory, constructivist theory, and conservation and animal welfare science. Camp activities were sensitive to U.S. animal welfare and conservation issues. Activities were designed to help children form bonds with animals and care enough about them to positively change their behavior toward animals and the environment. We will present our findings on children's thoughts about wildlife and nature and their commitments to protecting them. Lastly, we will present key aspects of humane education that could aid conservation outreach efforts toward stronger conservation impact.
