Giraffe conservation in Namibia is a true success story, especially compared to the species-wide decline of ~40% over the past 30 years throughout Africa. Giraffe have been re-introduced across much of their historic range in Namibia on public, private, and communal land, in an effort to support increased tourism, wildlife management and socio-economic benefits.
Our ongoing long-term giraffe conservation effort in Namibia's communal landscape has enable us a greater understanding of the behaviour, spatial ecology and social dynamics of one of the world's most iconic animals. In an effort to enhance our ecological findings in support of conservation management, we are delving into understanding the human component of why giraffe conservation in Namibia is a success. A preliminary overview of our findings will be presented in context of the conservation status of giraffe in Africa, the threats they face and the conservation actions being undertaken to save these gentle giants.
