The quantization of plasmons has been approached mostly under the assumption of an infinite-sized (bulk) medium interacting with the electromagnetic field. We propose a new approach geared to study finite-size media, such as metallic or dielectric nano-structures. We diagonalize the Hamiltonian by means of a Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and we obtain an expression of the electric field observable compatible with the standard free-field expression when the no-coupling limit is taken. The results apply to any structure interacting linearly with the electromagnetic field, including dissipative and dispersive responses.
