Philippa has worked in various roles within the rail industry over the past 20 years. She has worked on train radio design projects, in human factors at Network Rail, in the Infrastructure Projects arm of Network Rail and in RSSB's human factors team. Priya has worked in the rail industry for over 9 years, previously working with CIRAS as a researcher. She holds a Masters in Organisational Psychology and is working towards Chartered Psychologist status. Prior to joining RSSB, Priya worked as a lecturer on undergraduate and postgraduate courses in psychology, business and human resource management at London Metropolitan University. Priya has worked for a local London council and has experience of developing competency frameworks and training programmes in the voluntary sector. Her areas of rail expertise include competence management, non-technical skills, selection & assessment, risk-based training needs analysis, and fatigue. She is currently leading the validation of psychometric tests for train driver selection and supports RSSB in delivering NTS training.

Paul Leach

Paul is a Lead Human Factors Specialist with Chartered Occupational Psychologist status. For over 10 years he has been applying his expertise across a range of safety critical industries, including rail, nuclear, oil and gas, energy, utilities, defence, emergency services and healthcare. His work at RSSB focusses on: Supporting members implement non-technical skills through training, guidance, development of learning materials and advice Leading Human Factors work in relation to safety management at the Platform Train Interface Delivery training in psychometric testing for train drivers and providing industry with advice on psychometric assessment Delivering industry training and support for the Risk Based Training Needs Analysis Supporting European Agencies enhance safety culture across member states

Mary-Elizabeth Cross

Mary-Elizabeth joined RSSB 2 years ago having previously worked In Occupational Health and Wellbeing. She has a Master’s degree in both Applied Psychology and Occupational Psychology. She is in process of becoming both a chartered Ergonomist and Occupational Psychologist. Mary-Elizabeth’s main areas of expertise relate to environmental psychology, human behaviour, cognitive psychology, competencemanagement, learning and development and health psychology.

Abstract

Would you like to know more about Non-Technical Skills (NTS) and how they can be used to help manage competence and improve safety and performance? Would you like to be able to better integrate NTS across your competence management system (CMS) for any safety critical role? If so, then this workshop could be for you. The half day workshop will be run by RSSB’s NTS team who are made up of Occupational Psychologists, Selection specialists and Trainers, so you will have access to a broad range of experience and skills from which to ask your questions and get the answers you need to improve your company’s NTS integration.

The workshop is designed around the recent NTS integration guide, written by RSSB (https://www.rssb.co.uk/Library...).

By the end of the workshop you will:

Be familiar with RSSB’s Non-Technical Skills and their relation to the new ORR guidance RSP1 – link to NTS for any safety critical role http://www.orr.gov.uk/__data/a...-and-maintaining-staff-competence-rsp1.pdf
Be able to run an exercise on utilising NTS in a non-work environment
Be able to identify the right NTS related to a technical task
Know how to use and apply the Risk Based Training Needs Analysis
Understand how NTS relate to investigations and be able to run an exercise to measure NTS performance
Know where the rest of the industry is with their NTS integration
Be able to ask outstanding questions on NTS and their integration in the CMS
After completing the workshop, you will be able to take home the media used during the exercises for use in your organisation. These can help with either introducing (or re-introducing) NTS or building on integration work you have already undertaken, and they can be used as part of safety days or briefings.
The workshop will be of interest to anyone who has a working knowledge of NTS and its application in a safety critical environment to manage competence.
