The 2011 Te Reo Mauriora Report made some radical suggestions about the way in which te reo Māori revitalization efforts ought to be managed, utilizing a Māori cultural approach and with Māori practitioners at the helm determining the language strategy. Earlier language revitalization strategies have all been overseen by government agencies and through means not always conducive to Māori engagement nor managed in culturally appropriate ways. For Māori, engagement in all aspects of the planning and management of a te reo Māori language strategy is a must and the recommendations made in that report reflect that notion. This Paper sets out to explore how far these recommendations have progressed and asks what tangible and visible signs of progress can be noted in the language revitalization journey.
