In this paper I argue that achievement through the medium of Māori is demonstrated as the synthesis student content knowledge (marautanga) and the Māori language proficiency. We take a look at the levels of Māori language proficiency of Māori medium students, their learning in particular curricula (marautanga) and the resulting levels of achievement when significant attention is given to both. The Māori language proficiency of the students is derived from the assessment tool Kaiaka Reo and the curriculum proficiency on the whainga paetae (achievement objective) of the Marautanga (Māori medium curriculum).
