The movie Moana te reo Māori presented many challenges for the team who translated, interpreted and wrote the Māori script. The use of the term whakamāori and/or scripting instead of translation of te reo Māori is deliberate. Our agreement to participate had nothing to do with the movie. First and foremost it was because we were asked by trusted whanaunga (kin). Secondly, the task was about te reo Māori and its culture. Thirdly, we saw its potential in terms of Māori language revitalisation.
