What is a native speaker of the Māori language? This presentation briefly discusses nativity, after which it shares the analysis of the grammar of fluent Māori language speakers. The presentation is based on research with two main foci; the first component analyses high frequency grammar components taken from oral transcriptions. Because speakers are native speakers from their particular tribal areas, there is potential to view this analysis as dialectal, to some extent. The second component compares grammar components of two fluent speakers recorded 15 years apart. The hypothesis is whether native language speakers’ application of particular grammar points can be affected over time. Do such results provide a glimpse into language shift?
