This paper presents a guide for teachers to enable the explicit teaching of strategies which will contribute to students becoming more effective language learners. The development of Deliberate Acts of Language Learning (DALLs) is a response to a need expressed by teachers in Māori language education for guidance in effective learner strategies that can be explicitly taught in primary (and other) classrooms.

The acts of language learning and their implementation in the classroom will be explained, together with suggestions for integration in the programme and feedback from classroom practitioners given.
