     Transgender medicine seems to be a relatively new phenomenon given the near absence of media exposure until recently. However, the development and implementation of the field has its roots in Freudian psychology and early sexology. Historical accounts and current methods of treating transgender patients reveals a psychomedical model rooted in stigmatization and negligence, which has struggled to change significantly in the past few decades. A multidisciplinary approach to changing the field requires practitioners, academics, and medical personnel to address multiculturalism, class, and the long held emphasis on passing. Recommendations for change and an evaluation are discussed.
