Throughout the course of multiple decades, a number of bipyridine-based metal complexes have been prepared and characterized. However, it appears that effectively no bipyridines with attached ligands such as amines have been utilized in these complexes. Therefore, we are developing a simplified route to prepare 4,4’-diamino-2,2’-bipyridines, using azide and a t-Boc protection behavior. Once these new ligands are available we intend to determine their properties using standard spectroscopic techniques. The synthesis of metal complexes, such as those using platinum, will be prepared cleanly. These materials were then studied to better understand their chemical and physical properties. One such approach will be to use the amine groups as linkers for long alkyl chains to cause liquid crystalline behavior. An alternative approach would be to explore these new compounds as anti-cancer agents.
