As a part of the Environmental Arts & Humanities Major Capstone, Jessie has produced a series of both paintings and photography that will be featured in the Carlos Gallery April 11th - 24th. Together these mediums examine the importance of journey, exploration and connection to place in developing a sustainable environmental ethic. The paintings are large format oil landscapes on canvas that have been derived completely from imagination and inspired by both western and Appalachian aesthetics. The photographs, presented in platinum palladium prints by way of digital negatives, provide nuances in detail that the paintings do not. This involved form of printmaking is renowned for its unique ability to portray a wide variety of values in light. The western and Appalachian atmospheres persist in the photos as well, featuring both landscapes and object defined compositions that all explore the importance of light and shadow.
The works have been inspired by an amalgamation of classes and literature throughout Jessie’s four years at Sewanee. Friday, April 28th she will be presenting her capstone and speaking about the pieces, literature and environmental themes behind her subjects.
