This thesis in Architectural Studies is to design a new art museum for Middlebury College, on a site near the CFA (the land where the Solar Decathlon building sits, next to Meeker). The title of my project is “The Art Box,” which intends to capture the physical and metaphorical significance of the action that a box can do—“holding”—architecturally. The qualities of a box as manifested on the building of my project make the action of “holding” meaningful in three major ways. First, the boxy architectural form creates a central courtyard, consolidating the link between the Middlebury community and beyond. Second, the museum’s masonry outer skin and glass inner tissue extend the existing language of Middlebury’s built environment. Last but not least, as all the publicly accessible areas also serve to hold art, the museum holds for the visitors a seamless art-viewing experience.
The presentation will showcase an array of visual representations. I hope to include two physical models and a poster with some artistic, architectural, and digital drawings to illustrate both the conception and the final product of my design.
