Abandonment of minors abroad: parental violation of children's rights

Diny Flierman

Landelijk Knooppunt Huwelijksdwang en Achterlating (Dutch center on forced marriage and abandonment)

My name is Diny Flierman and I am manager of the Dutch expert center on forced marriage and abandonment. The center is founded in 2015. Along with the parties involved I wrote the plan to bring the center to The Hague. In 2014, I started and organised the center. My educational background includes an MA in Child and Family Science at the University Leiden in the Netherlands.  The Dutch expert center on forced marriage and abandonment advices and support professionals dealing with these cases. When victims are abroad, we help them to return to the Netherlands. We view forced marriage and abandonment as domestic violence and child abuse.  Dealing with forced marriage and/or abandonment is complicated. We view every case on its own merits. We offer short links between knowledge, policy and practice, collect and share knowledge and promote good cooperation among all relevant parties. We realize that knowledge and skills are the key to success. We raise awareness, inform and train professionals dealing with these cases. The Dutch center on forced marriage and abandonment is housed at Veilig Thuis Haaglanden, a regional center for domestic violence and child abuse.
