As a PhD student, I am involved in the international research project Hestia: Policies and responses with regard to child abuse and neglect in England, Germany and the Netherlands: a comparative multi-site study. This project aims to discover the nature and impact of variations in child protection systems through a comparison of three welfare states. This research project consists of three studies: an analysis of policy regarding child abuse and child protection, a case file analysis with regard to child protection investigations, and interviews with parents who have been involved in a child protection investigation to investigate their experiences. My PhD study focuses on the participation of children within the child protection system and the experiences of children. An important part of this is project Hebe. Project Hebe aims to gain knowledge about the experiences of children who have been involved in child protection. Moreover, the study will contribute to the development of new methods for involving children in research. Children and young adults who suffered child maltreatment participate as co-researchers in this project. With this, Hebe aims to give children a voice and shows the value of including children’s views in research and evaluation of policy and practice.
