Child Abuse linked to faith or belief – Awareness, understandings and application for practice

Lisa Oakley

Manchester Metropolitan University

Dr Lisa Oakley is programme leader for the only undergraduate course in Abuse Studies in the UK based at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is also a visiting fellow at Bournemouth university National Centre for Post-qualifying Social Work & Professional Practice and an associate with CCPAS (The Churches' Child Protection Advisory Service). Her research is principally in the area of faith based abuse. In 2013 Lisa co-authored a book entitled ‘Breaking the Silence on Spiritual Abuse’. Lisa is a member of the National working group for Child Abuse linked to Faith or Belief and is the principal investigator on the current research project into this form of abuse. Lisa is the chair of the National Task and Finish group for Spiritual Abuse in the Church of England. She is an adviser to an ESRC project researching gender, violence and justice. She is currently a member of the United Reformed Church learning group for their past case review. Lisa has spoken extensively on the topic faith based abuse across the UK at national and international conferences. Lisa has over 23 years experience of teaching in the Higher Education context. 

Justin Humphreys

CCPAS

Justin Humphreys MSc., BSc.(Hons), DipCPP is Executive Director (Safeguarding) at The Churches' Child Protection Advisory Service (CCPAS); the first and only independent Christian safeguarding charity in the UK established in 1977.His career to date has spanned over 25 years working in a variety of youth work, social work and related settings in both the statutory and voluntary sector, predominantly focused on children, young people and their families. He is currently the Chair of the Christian Forum for Safeguarding (a UK-wide, inter-denominational body of safeguarding professionals), Independent Chair of the Diocese of Bristol Safeguarding Steering Group and a member of the National Working Group on Child Abuse Linked to Faith or Belief. He is also Visiting Fellow at the National Centre for Post-qualifying Social Work & Professional Practice at Bournemouth University, focusing on safeguarding in faith-based contexts.Justin’s research interests to date have included Safer Recruitment Practices in the Christian Church, Safeguarding Adults with the Christian Community, Child Abuse Linked to Faith or Belief and Spiritual Abuse in the Christian Community.Justin holds an Honours degree in Social Work Studies, a Masters degree in Child Protection & Strategic Management and a Diploma in Counselling Psychology & Psychotherapy.
