Using Simulations and other Experiential Learning Activities in Child Welfare Training

Ellen Smith is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University Of Wisconsin-Madison School Of Social Work. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Consumer Science and a Masters of Science in Social Work degree from the University of Texas-Arlington. She is currently the director of the the Child Welfare Training Program; a program which prepares bachelors and masters level social workers for work in Public Child Welfare.  In addition, Ellen teaches courses on social work practice in child welfare. Ellen has worked as a curriculum coordinator for the Wisconsin Child Welfare Professional Development System and worked on curriculum development projects that included online learning, blended learning, field coaching and traditional training workshops. Ellen has worked with a variety of states and local child welfare agencies to help improve their child welfare training systems to make them more competency based and skill oriented. She has worked in the field of Child Welfare for 25 years starting as a child protective services social worker in the 1990's and is passionate about training and supporting the child welfare workforce.
