The phenomenon of Human Trafficking/Migrants Smuggling (undocumented, forced and irregular migration) especially those involving child trafficking, poverty, marginalization, deprivation and illiteracy are intrinsically intertwined and multifaceted human/minority rights, socio-cultural, humanitarian and economic development problems. These challenges, also affects social cohesion, human development, peace, safety and security a bad situation that has become a blot on the conscience of society.
According to the US department of state report on human trafficking (2012), Ghana is a trafficking and smuggling of persons country of origin, transit and destination.
To understand the pivotal role that the tourism sector can play in ameliorating human trafficking/migrants smuggling, the author presents the core services (value chain activities) that underpin the tourism, travel and hospitality industry which includes but not limited to the following highlights:
- Transport services providers
- Accommodation facilities
- Food and beverage service providers
- Professional intermediaries
- Recreational, leisure, entertainment, shopping and sports facilities
From the above, it will be justifiable to state that, the Tourism industry is the unintended facilitator of the Human Trafficking/Migrants Smuggling industry, which opens the floodgate for the blatant criminal abuse and exploitation of children particularly girls. Therefore, providing training for relevant tourism stakeholders will be an excellent social, humanitarian and economic responsibility action.
