TITLE: CHILDREN IN FLIGHT FROM ABUSE
Authors: Eileen Vizard, Jenny Gray, Isabelle Guitard
Objectives:
- To address three of the conference themes, Sexual Abuse, Child Trafficking and Refugee Children and explore links between them and a fourth emerging issue, i.e. Child Soldiers.
- To present and identify relevant gaps in the published literature on all four issues to suggest future research directions.
- To raise awareness of the effects of these four issues on children’s health and adjustment in a range of international contexts, particularly difficulties in providing intervention for children in transit across very different countries and cultures.
- To include the little recognized needs of girl and boy child soldiers coerced into committing atrocities which intensify the impact of their earlier abuse experiences.
- To include interactive exercises which allow the practical experiences of delegates to be heard and to inform the conclusions of the symposium.
- To present Hope for Children and Families evidence based intervention guides which address the training needs of professionals (Bentovim & Gray, 2016). The guides will suggest methods of intervening in the lives of children fleeing war or trauma in different countries and jurisdictions whilst addressing their human rights (UNCRC 1989).
- To include interactive exercises within the workshop which will allow the practical experiences of delegates to be heard to inform the conclusions of the event.
Method:
A narrative review of the relevant literatures will be undertaken and the findings summarized and presented. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using the intervention materials which are relevant for children in flight from abuse.
Results:
The findings and conclusions from the presentations will be summarized in a paper for submission to Child Abuse & Neglect.
Conclusions:
The presentations’ conclusions will identify the help needed by children in flight and how the HfCF intervention materials can assist them.
