Carol Jolliffe is a Consultant Systemic Psychotherapist and Lead for Family Therapy for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for an NHS Foundation Trust. She also works privately and a trainer, therapist and consultant in a range of settings including social care and she is a tutor and visiting lecturer for the Tavistock and Portman Centre and Canterbury Christ Church University. She has a particular interest in promoting collaboration between therapy and safeguarding services for children

Title:
Keeping ‘mega anger’ out in the shed; approaches to managing behaviour and improving relationships in families where there is adult conflict and violence

Objectives
To consider the themes of safety and therapy with families who have experienced high conflict divorce and domestic violence.
To review existing research and practice around whole family approaches to creating change in these populations
To summarise The Family Assessment (Bentovim and Bingley Miller 2001) and its application to assessment of the capacity for change in these families.
To present materials from the Hope for Children and Families evidence based intervention guide Working with Families (Jolliffe 2016). The guide comprises training materials and approaches for professionals that are designed to support practice in safety management and creating relational change in these families
Method
Emphasising solution focused and narrative ideas, approaches to whole family working in relation to conflicted families will be presented for small and large group discussion and the assessment and intervention materials noted above will be used in interactive exercises with participants.
A case study and dvd material will be used to promote discussion, connection and reflection with participants’ own experience in the presentations and the exercises
Participants will be encouraged in the workshop to apply ideas and training material to their own practice / services.
Results
A brief summary of relevant research findings will be presented plus a narrative of outcomes from the case study
Conclusions
Family based interventions can be used where there is adult conflict and domestic abuse subject to adherence to clear safety criteria and plan. They can create the possibility of relationship change for the family that is sustainable.
