The global and regional challenges tourism faces are unprecedented. Planning, policy and management strategies will require disruptive change as we look forward. First, we must recognize the necessity of change and second we must prepare for the changes that will occur. The past 10 years have seen subtle and dramatic shifts especially in terms of global challenges and competition between destinations and emerging markets at levels not experienced before. Economic cycles, concern about sustainability, climate change, crime and terrorism, safety and security, immigration, use of information technology, and human resources and training are simply a few of the concerns impacting the public and private sectors. This presentation discusses some of those challenges, the willingness to make small and large changes and the possible ramifications.
