Online patient narratives, a valuable resource to help cultivate compassion among healthcare professionals

Maggie Bennett RN,MSc, Maggie is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University, Belfast.She began nursing in 1989, initially caring for patients in intensive care but latterly in the community as a district nurse. Throughout her clinical career she has mentored nursing students in practice to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to care for patients. Findings from her MSc study, exploring nurses’ experience of assessing students in practice, were included in the Willis Commission Review of nurse education in the UK. Since taking up her appointment as a lecturer she has increasingly used online patient narratives as a teaching resource to help cultivate compassion among nursing students.

Deborah Coleman

Queens University Belfast

Deborah is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University, Belfast. She is a co-ordinator for the year 2 Care Delivery module in the undergraduate programme and is Pathway Leader for the BSc (Hons)/Graduate Diploma Specialist Practice in Nursing Care of Older People. Deborah is a Registered Nurse and Specialist Practitioner (District Nursing). Deborah is a student on the Doctorate of Nursing Practice and is currently writing up her thesis for submission in December 2015. The teaching and learning strategies, used to support nursing students, to develop holistic assessment skills with older people, is the focus of her doctoral thesis. She maintains an interest in all issues relating to care of the older person, both in practice and education, reviewing for a number of journals on these topics.
