This paper presents some initial results of the iMlango project which collects, evaluates and uses data to promote learning. iMlango is an innovative e-learning solution that aims to improve the learning outcomes for 52,000 marginalised girls across 195 schools in Kenya through the delivery of:
• High speed internet connectivity to the schools: the provision of broadband internet to the schools enables their access to a wide range of resources and services.
• A learning platform and online educational content: access to the online 1-to-1 tutoring Maths Whizz software, as well as whole class content for Maths and Literacy creates an opportunity for better education in these curriculum subjects. Exposure to Life Skills information and interactions through the online channel will improve the life chances of marginalised girls, through awareness of opportunities and a greater positive aspiration and outlook.
• A conditional payment scheme to stimulate attendance: a tangible financial link to attendance by girls will encourage parents to ensure school attendance.
• ICT infrastructure, capacity building and in-field support: building the capacity of teachers and students to use the project components.
What makes this project unique is the real-time data collected that inform us about its progress and enable us to adjust the project activities if needed. The data collected is used to effectively create student profiles that allow us to track the progress of every individual. The data includes daily attendance through the use of smartcards, detailed Maths progress reports and time spent on the learning platform components.
