BAICE ‘Question Time’
Learning and Teaching for Sustainable Development: Current Issues and Debate
Organiser: Professor Qing Gu and Dr Alison Buckler
Chair: Professor Kenneth King
Panellists: Professors Keith Lewin, Fazal Rizvi, and Michele Schweisfurth
This symposium is part of a series of events to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE). It is set up in the form of a BBC Question Time Forum for debate and discussion of issues relating to the overarching theme of the Conference: Learning and Teaching for Sustainable Development: Curriculum, Cognition and Context. It will be chaired by Professor Kenneth King who is a former President of BAICE and Emeritus Professor of International and Comparative Education at the University of Edinburgh.
Three distinguished scholars in the field of education and development will form the specialist panel:
- Professor Keith Lewin, a past President of BAICE, is Professor of International Education at the University of Sussex. He has written extensively on issues of educational planning, economics and finance of education, access and equity in education and development, teacher education, science and technology education policy in developing countries, educational aid and project evaluation.
- Professor Michele Schweisfurth, a former Chair of BAICE, is Professor of Comparative and International Education at the University of Glasgow. She is Chair of the Board of Trustees for UKFIET and Vice-President of the Comparative Education Society in Europe. Her expertise is around the tensions between global frameworks and notions of ‘best practice’ in teaching and learning, and local and cultural imperatives.
- Professor Fazal Rizvi, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Social Sciences, is Professor of Global Studies in Education at the University of Melbourne, as well as an Emeritus Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States. His areas of specialism include issues of identity and culture in transnational contexts, globalisation and education policy and Australia-Asia relations.
How to participate:
The symposium is open to all conference participants who are invited to think about a question relating to the broad theme of the UKFIET Conference. Questions must be submitted by 7am on Wednesday 6th September.
- Questions can be submitted to a dedicated Twitter account #BAICEQT
- They can also be posted in dedicated BAICE Question Time drop-off boxes that are located in the Foyer of the Exam Schools and at the Reception in New College, and at the reception on Tuesday evening
Please leave your contact details when submitting questions so that we can contact you before the session if your question is chosen.
The panel debate will combine careful preparation of a small number of pre-selected questions with spontaneous input. If your question is selected and you are at the conference, you will be expected to attend the session to read it out. Each question will be followed by responses from each of the panellists and then questions, commentary and debate from the audience. We envisage that this will be an engaging and interactive session with challenging stimulation from the Chair.
The panel debate will be live-tweeted with #BAICEQT to engage wider audience at the conference as well as beyond the conference participants.
