The West Metro in the Helsinki metropolitan area will be extended to the west in two phases. The first phase was completed in November 2017 when the Ruoholahti-Matinkylä phase was opened for traffic.

Second phase Matinkylä–Kivenlahti section of the rail line will include five new stations: Finnoo, Kaitaa, Soukka, Espoonlahti, Kivenlahti and underground metro depot in Sammalvuori. Second phase stations are designed by using BIM methodology from spring 2017.

Alongside the traditional project management tools, West Metro has decided to develop new methods and tools for the second phase of the West Metro. One of the main goals is to get a more accurate situational awareness of the project for project management team. One of the chosen methods is wider and more holistic utilization of building information models in the project.

BIM models are still stereotyped as engineering tools and their benefits are most often seen in the results of coordination between different design and engineerig disciplines. Building contractors utilize the information models in many ways, for example scheduling and work planning. However, information for project management is collected from other sources than BIM models. In general, BIM models should serve the life cycle of the entire project and the information contained in the BIM model should also be used in the project management.

This presentation will give some answers and questions for utilizing building information models in daily project management.
