In this presentation we will explore the "elephant in the room".

Often times it is the regulatory requirements that are a roadblock to digital adoption, with AEC team's favorite excuse for falling back on 2D documentation being the need to submit to the city for permit in a traditional way.

With all the impetus now placed on our industry to increase productivity, it is time to push government at the local, and national level, to not just adopt a digital workflow themselves, but rather be the ones to require it.

Mandates toward BIM in places like the UK are a good start, but a lack of definition is still an issue.

In our research, we are exploring the advantages of working with data, rather than documents in project decision making.  Currently, we are extending research to identify the roadblock from a local government point of view.  By the summit's time, we expect to have input from several government agencies on permitting process on both private and public projects, and hope to understand the friction points that need to be addressed.

Certainly, government is expected to move slower than private industry, but in this case, there is an opportunity to create a mandate for innovation, and we argue, it is needed to propel industry in the necessary direction.
