Current modelling technologies and tools have heavily focused on features supporting efficient design and detailing. At the same time construction industry in general is suffering from inefficient and error prone sporadic management of workflows. In DiCtion project Trimble is looking forward to plan and create a digital environment for creating, sharing and consuming the process data linked to physical model objects in co-operation with the key Finnish research organizations and industry representatives.
The presentation gives an overview of the DiCtion project in general and discusses about the technological concepts and key features of the future digital environment for managing the workflows. The implementation mechanisms of the technology and implications of them are also addressed.
The objective of the development is to give all stakeholders of the project access to a shared cross organizational situation picture of the project – what has happened, what is happening just now and what shall happen next. Crucial for the success is to create new understandable and collaborative project planning and production management concepts and data models as well easy to use user applications and interfaces for utilizing the back end system for shared management of operations in a construction project. The modern distributed information management linked data based architecture and technology is also playing a key role in the implementation.
The nature of the future digital working environment is one of the essential qualities to be taken into account. The current authoritarian top down command chain used widely in construction workflows will get challenged by collaborative, distributed and transparent way of working using the up-to-date accurate workflow information linked to the BIM models.
Openness and transparency will be additional key attributes for the system. Workflows can be easily build in co-operation with 3rd parties and other ICT systems. The technological development providing new rich and detailed workflow information will enable the evolution of processes, which results as savings and improved quality in the construction industry as process faults are going down.
