”An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.” Famous quote from retired business executive Jack Welch seems today more actual than ever. As topics like artificial intelligence, 5D project management and prefabrication dominate construction industry conversations about the future of work, some predict catastrophic disruptive changes in the industry as we know it today.
We believe that truth will be moderate and not extreme. Still, ability to learn and develop will be evermore decisive, making distinction between those who will succeed and those who shall regress. In 2014-2016, Deloitte & MIT asked 3000 senior executives about the level of digital disruption in their industry. Over 90% of them answered, that their core business model is under attack. Furthermore, 70% of them said, that I do not have the right management team, I do not have the right skills to adapt to that business model.
Strong know-how in construction production has been the bread and butter of Fira Ltd in the past. The future might be very different. Fira has established strategy of introducing new digital service model to construction business. And not just for Finland but globally! Evidently, that cannot happen without supporting and fostering learning not only inside Fira but also among partners, suppliers and stakeholders. Actually, this is a matter of life and death during the current disruption where both markets and businesses are reforming.
Finland has the reputation of being the “country number one” in education. Valamis Group Oy (Valamis) is one of the contributors, developing and providing learning solutions for players such as NASA or Amadeus. Valamis has successfully combined know-how of learning, user experience and bleeding edge technology into practical learning experience platform implementation. However, this does not mean that Valamis itself is immune to disruption. The future is equally fuzzy in learning experience business and the imperative to learn and adapt is even more compelling than in any other field.
Fira & Valamis have both come into conclusion that thriving in disruption is more likely when - instead of traditional customer-supplied setup - competent organizations learn from each other and do open co-development. Together we are stronger. This presentation is an example of that. This joint journey started in 2017, mission to seek excellence in the field of organization’s ability to learn.
Today we see that our common path to success is a combination of best practices, advanced technology and continuous dialogue, rapidly put to concrete via tests and trials. In our presentation, we will discuss what are the greatest hazards and the most burning problems related to learning and development in construction industry. Finally, we will suggest solution models for bringing the industry into today’s and tomorrow’s era.
