International trade has been the main driver for the rapid growth of the bivalve mollusc industry during the last six decades. Considering the problems faced by developing countries in particular in implementing bivalve sanitation programme, FAO, along with WHO, established an Expert Group to a develop a technical and pragmatic guidance document to support countries in the establishment of shellfish sanitation programmes in line with the Codex Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products.
The guidance focuses on the primary production of bivalve molluscs intended for live or raw consumption, thus supporting implementation of Section 7.2 of the Codex Code of Practice. The guidance is divided into six components: Growing Area Risk Profile, Growing Area Assessment; Growing Area Monitoring; Classification; Growing Area Management and Growing Area Review. Apart from guidance on how to undertake these steps, a range of templates and resources are provided to facilitate application at country level. The guidance focuses primarily on the general requirements and microbiological hazards. For chemical hazards, toxin phytoplankton and biotoxins, reference is provided to the substantial array of existing resources including relevant Codex standards and Codex and other international guidance. As follow-up to the stakeholder meeting convened during the 10th ICMSS, this presentation will provide an overview of the Technical Guidance for the Development of Bivalve Mollusc Sanitation Programs and some of the experiences, lessons learned and challenges identified and addressed during their pilot implementation in several African countries.
